North Carolina State University at Raleigh

North Carolina State University at Raleigh is a public land-grant research university located in Raleigh, North Carolina. Founded in 1887, it is part of the University of North Carolina System and is commonly known as NC State. North Carolina State University at Raleigh was founded in 1887 as the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts under the Morrill Act, reflecting the state’s commitment to practical higher education. Located in Raleigh, the college opened to students in 1889 with a focus on agriculture, engineering, and military science. In 1918 it was renamed North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering as its academic offerings expanded. During the Great Depression, it became administratively consolidated within the Consolidated University of North Carolina system. In 1963 the institution adopted the name North Carolina State of the University of North Carolina at Raleigh, and in 1965 the General Assembly approved its current name, North Carolina State University at Raleigh. Over the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, the university grew into a major public research institution, broadening its programs, research capacity, and role within the Research Triangle region.
