History

Michigan State University was founded in 1855 in East Lansing, Michigan, as the Agricultural College of the State of Michigan, becoming the first institution in the United States to teach scientific agriculture. The college opened to students in 1857 under its first president, Joseph R. Williams. After the Morrill Act of 1862 established the federal land-grant system, the institution became a model for land-grant universities nationwide. In 1861 it was renamed the State Agricultural College, and in 1909 it became Michigan Agricultural College. Reflecting its expanded academic scope beyond agriculture, it adopted the name Michigan State College in 1925 and became Michigan State University in 1955. Over the twentieth century, Michigan State University grew into a major public research university, adding graduate and professional programs and expanding its campus and research infrastructure.
