Pennsylvania State University-Main Campus

Pennsylvania State University-Main Campus is a public land-grant research university located in University Park, Pennsylvania. It serves as the flagship campus of the Pennsylvania State University system and offers a comprehensive range of undergraduate, graduate, and professional degree programs. Pennsylvania State University-Main Campus was founded in 1855 as the Farmers’ High School of Pennsylvania, created to provide agricultural education to the state’s citizens. In 1862, the Morrill Land-Grant Act strengthened its mission, and the institution was designated Pennsylvania’s land-grant university in 1863. Evan Pugh became its first president in 1859 and helped establish scientific and agricultural research as central priorities. The school was renamed The Pennsylvania State College in 1874 as its curriculum expanded beyond agriculture into engineering, science, and the liberal arts. During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, under leaders such as George W. Atherton, the college broadened academic offerings and stabilized its finances. In 1953, it achieved university status and became The Pennsylvania State University. Since then, Pennsylvania State University-Main Campus in University Park has grown into a major public research institution with a statewide campus system.
