History

University of Pittsburgh-Pittsburgh Campus was founded in 1787 as the Pittsburgh Academy while the city was still on the American frontier. In 1819, its charter was amended and it became the Western University of Pennsylvania, reflecting its expanded academic mission. Throughout the nineteenth century, the institution rebuilt after major fires and gradually broadened its curriculum beyond classical studies. In 1908, it was officially renamed the University of Pittsburgh to emphasize its connection to the city. The university began consolidating its operations in the Oakland neighborhood in the early twentieth century, where the Cathedral of Learning was later constructed. In 1966, University of Pittsburgh-Pittsburgh Campus became part of Pennsylvania’s Commonwealth System of Higher Education. Over time, it developed into a major public research university with regional campuses and strong partnerships in medicine and science.
