History

Western Michigan University was founded in 1903 in Kalamazoo, Michigan, as Western State Normal School to address a regional need for trained teachers. Authorized by Governor Aaron T. Bliss, the institution opened with a focus on two-year teacher preparation programs under its first president, Dwight B. Waldo, who led the school from 1904 to 1936. Over the early twentieth century, the institution expanded its curriculum and authority to grant four-year degrees, becoming Western State Teachers College in 1927 and Western Michigan College of Education in 1941. In 1955 it was renamed Western Michigan College, and in 1957 it officially became Western Michigan University, reflecting its broader academic mission. Since then, Western Michigan University has developed into a comprehensive public research university, adding graduate and doctoral programs, expanding its campuses, and strengthening research and professional education in southwest Michigan.
