History

Harding University was founded in 1924 in Morrilton, Arkansas, following the merger of Arkansas Christian College and Harper College. Originally named Harding College in honor of minister and educator James A. Harding, the institution was established to provide Christian higher education within the Churches of Christ tradition. In 1934, Harding College relocated to Searcy, Arkansas, after purchasing the former Galloway College campus. During the mid-twentieth century, the college expanded its academic offerings and national profile, and in 1979 it officially became Harding University to reflect its growth in graduate and professional programs. Over the decades, Harding University developed additional campuses in Arkansas and established international study programs. Today, Harding University continues to operate as a private Christian university in Searcy, maintaining its founding mission while broadening its academic scope and campus facilities.
