Northern Illinois University

Northern Illinois University is a public research university located in DeKalb, Illinois. Established in 1895, it serves as one of Illinois’ public institutions offering undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral programs across multiple colleges. The university was originally founded to prepare teachers and has since expanded into a comprehensive institution with programs in business, engineering, education, health, liberal arts, and the sciences. Northern Illinois University also maintains satellite locations in Chicago, Naperville, and Rockford. As a member of the NCAA Division I Mid-American Conference, its athletic teams compete as the Huskies. Northern Illinois University was founded in 1895 in DeKalb, Illinois, as Northern Illinois State Normal School to prepare teachers during a period of statewide expansion in public education. The institution opened later that year and began building its academic foundation under its first president, John Williston Cook, who took office in 1899. In 1921, it became Northern Illinois State Teachers College and gained authority to grant four-year degrees. The institution expanded its mission in the mid-twentieth century, adding graduate programs and broadening beyond teacher education. Renamed Northern Illinois State College in 1955, it achieved university status in 1957 as Northern Illinois University, reflecting its comprehensive liberal arts and professional offerings. Governance structures evolved through state reorganization in the late twentieth century, and in 1996 NIU established its own board of trustees. Today, Northern Illinois University operates as a public research university serving students across Illinois.
