History

Trinity International University-Illinois was founded in 1897 when the Swedish Evangelical Free Church began a ten-week Bible course in Chicago to train pastors and lay leaders. Under the leadership of founding president Peter Johan Elmquist, the program developed into the Swedish Bible Institute of Chicago. In the early twentieth century, it merged with the Norwegian-Danish Bible Institute and Academy, and by 1949 the unified schools became Trinity Seminary and Bible College. The institution relocated to Bannockburn, Illinois, in 1961 and expanded its academic offerings, including the establishment of Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. In 1995, several related institutions were formally united as Trinity International University-Illinois. The university later added Trinity Law School in California and developed graduate programs. In recent years, Trinity International University-Illinois has restructured programs while maintaining its theological and professional education mission.
