Southern Illinois University-Carbondale was chartered in 1869 as Southern Illinois Normal College to train teachers in the region. Located in Carbondale, Illinois, the institution opened for classes in 1874 after construction delays. In its early decades, Southern Illinois University-Carbondale focused on teacher education while expanding academic departments and campus facilities. In 1943, the institution began offering graduate-level coursework, and in 1947 it was renamed Southern Illinois University to reflect its broader mission. The university awarded its first doctoral degree in 1959 and expanded its academic reach with the establishment of additional campuses, including Edwardsville in 1957.
