Central Michigan University

Central Michigan University is a public research university located in Mount Pleasant, Michigan. Founded in 1892, it serves undergraduate and graduate students across a wide range of academic disciplines, including business, education, health professions, science and technology, humanities, and the arts. Central Michigan University was founded in 1892 in Mount Pleasant, Michigan, as the Central Michigan Normal School and Business Institute to train teachers for the state’s public schools. In 1895, it became a state institution and was renamed Central State Normal School. As demand for broader academic programs grew, the institution expanded its curriculum and became a four-year degree-granting institution in 1918. Throughout the early and mid-20th century, Central Michigan University continued to add academic departments and campus facilities. In 1959, reflecting its expanded mission and enrollment growth, it was officially renamed Central Michigan University. In the decades that followed, CMU developed graduate programs and research initiatives, including the establishment of its College of Medicine in 2010. Today, Central Michigan University operates as a comprehensive public university serving students in Michigan and beyond.
