History

The University of Toledo was founded in 1872 in Toledo, Ohio, as the Toledo University of Arts and Trades after local editor Jesup Wakeman Scott donated land to establish a university. The institution closed in 1878 due to financial difficulties but reopened in 1884 as the Toledo Manual Training School under city ownership. In 1914 it became Toledo University, expanding its academic offerings and stabilizing under President Jerome Raymond and later leaders. The university moved to its current Main Campus site in 1931. It joined the state university system in 1967 and adopted the name University of Toledo. A major milestone occurred in 2006 when the University of Toledo merged with the Medical University of Ohio, creating a comprehensive public research university with a health science campus. Today, the University of Toledo is recognized for extensive research activity and professional education.
