History

Aurora University was founded in 1893 in Mendota, Illinois, as Mendota Seminary by the Western Advent Christian Publication Association. The institution soon became known as Mendota College and expanded its curriculum beyond ministerial training to include a broader liberal arts education. In 1912, the college relocated to Aurora, Illinois, and adopted the name Aurora College, reflecting its new home and growing enrollment. Following World War II, Aurora College experienced increased enrollment, particularly through evening programs serving veterans. The institution separated from the Advent Christian Church in 1971 and, in 1985, was renamed Aurora University to reflect its expanding academic offerings, including graduate degrees. In 1992, Aurora University affiliated with George Williams College, formally merging in 2000 and strengthening programs in social work. Today, Aurora University operates as a comprehensive private university serving students in Illinois and beyond.
