Western Carolina University

Western Carolina University is a public university located in Cullowhee, North Carolina, and a member of the University of North Carolina system. Established in 1889, it serves students from across the state and region, particularly in western North Carolina. The university offers undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral programs across disciplines including business, education, health and human sciences, engineering and technology, and the arts. Western Carolina University is known for its regional engagement mission, strong ties to Appalachian and Cherokee heritage, and its mountain campus setting near the Great Smoky Mountains. Western Carolina University was founded in 1889 in Cullowhee, North Carolina, as Cullowhee Academy, a community school created to improve educational opportunities in the western part of the state. Established under the leadership of Robert Lee Madison, the institution soon expanded its mission to train teachers, becoming the first publicly funded normal school in North Carolina in 1893. Over the following decades, it evolved through several name changes, including Western Carolina Teachers College in 1929, reflecting its growth into a four-year institution. In 1953 it became Western Carolina College, and in 1967 it was designated Western Carolina University as part of the University of North Carolina system. Throughout the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, Western Carolina University expanded its academic programs, facilities, and regional engagement efforts, developing into a comprehensive public university serving western North Carolina.
