History

Kent State University at Kent was founded in 1910 as the Ohio State Normal College at Kent to train public school teachers in Ohio. Renamed Kent State Normal School in 1911, it began holding classes in 1912 under its first president, John Edward McGilvrey. As academic offerings expanded beyond teacher education, the institution became Kent State Normal College in 1915, Kent State College in 1929, and officially Kent State University in 1935. After World War II, enrollment increased significantly and regional campuses were established across Northeast Ohio. In May 1970, Kent State University at Kent gained international attention following the Kent State shootings during protests against the Vietnam War. In the decades that followed, the university broadened its research profile, developed additional graduate programs, and expanded facilities on its Kent campus. Today, Kent State University at Kent serves as the flagship campus of a comprehensive public research university system.
