History

North Carolina A & T State University was founded on March 9, 1891, by an act of the North Carolina General Assembly as the Agricultural and Mechanical College for the Colored Race, following the Second Morrill Act of 1890. Established initially in Raleigh, the institution moved to Greensboro in 1893, where local citizens donated land and funds to support its permanent campus. John Oliver Crosby was elected as the first president in 1892. The college awarded its first degrees in 1899 and expanded its academic offerings in agriculture and mechanical arts. In 1915, the name changed to the Negro Agricultural and Technical College of North Carolina. The institution began offering graduate programs in 1939 and was redesignated North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University in 1967. Today, North Carolina A & T State University is a doctoral research university and the largest historically Black university in the United States.
