History

The University of Missouri-Kansas City was founded in 1933 as the University of Kansas City, opening its doors on October 1 of that year in Kansas City, Missouri. The institution grew out of earlier efforts in the 1920s to establish a four-year university in the city, merging with existing professional schools such as the Kansas City School of Law in 1938, the Kansas City-Western Dental College in 1941, and the College of Pharmacy in 1943. In 1963, the University of Kansas City joined the University of Missouri System and became the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Over the following decades, University of Missouri-Kansas City expanded its academic offerings, research activity, and campus facilities, including development of its Health Sciences District. In recent years, University of Missouri-Kansas City has achieved Carnegie R1 research status, reflecting its growth as a major public research university in the region.
