History

University of New Mexico-Main Campus was founded in 1889, when the Territorial Legislature of New Mexico established the institution in Albuquerque. Created two decades before New Mexico achieved statehood in 1912, the university was intended to serve as the future state university. Elias S. Stover became its first president, and the first building, Hodgin Hall, opened in 1892. In the early twentieth century, the campus expanded its academic programs and physical footprint, adopting distinctive Pueblo Revival architecture that shaped its visual identity. Following World War II, enrollment increased significantly, and new colleges and professional schools were developed, including programs in law and medicine. Over time, University of New Mexico-Main Campus grew into a comprehensive public research university, strengthening graduate education and federally funded research. Today, it remains the state’s flagship institution, continuing to evolve while serving students across New Mexico and beyond.
