History

Grand Valley State University was founded in 1960 as Grand Valley State College to provide a public four-year institution serving West Michigan. The college was established in Allendale, Michigan, and opened to students in 1963 under its first president, James H. Zumberge. During the late 1960s and 1970s, the institution expanded its academic offerings and campus facilities, reflecting growing regional demand for higher education. In 1987, Grand Valley State College was officially renamed Grand Valley State University to reflect its expanded graduate programs and broader mission. Over the following decades, Grand Valley State University developed additional campuses in Grand Rapids and strengthened programs in business, health professions, education, and the sciences. Today, Grand Valley State University serves more than 20,000 students and remains a key public university in Michigan’s higher education system.
