History

Lipscomb University was founded in 1891 in Nashville, Tennessee, as the Nashville Bible School by David Lipscomb and James A. Harding. Established to provide a Christian liberal arts education grounded in the Churches of Christ tradition, the institution initially focused on biblical and classical studies. In 1918, the school was renamed David Lipscomb College, reflecting its broader academic scope. Lipscomb University graduated its first senior class in 1948 and received regional accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools in 1954. In 1988, after gaining approval to offer master’s degrees, the institution adopted the name Lipscomb University. Over time, Lipscomb University expanded its academic offerings to include professional programs in business, education, nursing, pharmacy, and engineering. A 2021 merger with Austin Graduate School of Theology further extended its graduate theological education, shaping the modern comprehensive university in Nashville.
