Classes were initially held in facilities at the former Naval Air Station Melbourne before the university moved to its current campus in 1961. During the 1960s, Florida Institute of Technology expanded its academic offerings, constructed key campus buildings, and earned accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools in 1964. In 1966, it officially adopted the name Florida Institute of Technology. Over the following decades, the university added graduate and doctoral programs, research institutes, and new academic colleges, developing into a research-focused institution serving students on campus and online.
