University of San Diego is a private Roman Catholic research university located in San Diego, California. Situated on a hilltop campus overlooking Mission Bay, the university offers undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs through its College of Arts and Sciences and several professional schools, including business, law, engineering, and nursing. Founded in the mid‑20th century, it operates within the Catholic intellectual tradition and emphasizes liberal arts education alongside professional preparation. University of San Diego was founded in 1949 when Bishop Charles F. Buddy and Mother Rosalie Hill chartered the institution on land known as Alcalá Park in San Diego, California. The university began as separate institutions for men and women rooted in the Catholic intellectual tradition. In 1952, the College for Women opened, followed by the San Diego College for Men and the School of Law. Charles F. Buddy served as the first president, guiding early campus development. In 1972, the separate colleges merged to form the coeducational University of San Diego, unifying its academic programs under one administration. Over the following decades, University of San Diego expanded its professional schools, including business, engineering, nursing, and peace studies, and strengthened its research profile. Today, University of San Diego continues to operate as a private Catholic university serving undergraduate, graduate, and professional students in Southern California.
