History

Loyola Marymount University traces its origins to 1865, when St. Vincent’s College was founded in Los Angeles by the Vincentians. In 1911, the Jesuits assumed control of the institution, and it became Loyola College of Los Angeles, later renamed Loyola University of Los Angeles in 1930. Meanwhile, the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary established Marymount Junior College in 1932, which evolved into Marymount College. In 1973, Loyola University and Marymount College merged to form Loyola Marymount University, uniting Jesuit and Marymount traditions in Los Angeles. Over the following decades, Loyola Marymount University expanded its academic programs, campus facilities, and research profile. Today, Loyola Marymount University serves undergraduate and graduate students across multiple colleges and professional schools, maintaining its Catholic heritage while operating as a comprehensive private research university in Southern California.
