Florida International University

Florida International University is a public research university located in Miami, Florida. Founded in 1965, it is part of the State University System of Florida and classified as a doctoral university with very high research activity. The university offers a wide range of undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs across disciplines including business, engineering, international relations, hospitality, health sciences, and the arts. Florida International University was founded in 1965 after the Florida Legislature approved plans to establish a public university in Miami-Dade County to serve the region’s rapidly growing population. The institution was officially named Florida International University in 1969, and Chuck Perry was appointed as its first president. FIU opened its doors to students in 1972, emphasizing access and an international mission reflective of South Florida’s global connections. During the 1970s and 1980s, the university expanded its academic offerings and research capacity, adding new colleges and graduate programs. Under subsequent leadership, Florida International University strengthened its focus on international studies and community engagement. In the decades that followed, FIU grew into one of the largest public universities in the United States, achieving Carnegie R1 research status and expanding its campuses and professional schools, shaping its modern role in higher education in Miami and beyond.
