History

University of Puget Sound was founded in 1888 in Tacoma, Washington, by the Methodist Episcopal Church. Chartered on March 17, 1888, as The Puget Sound University, the institution opened to students in 1890 with a mission to provide Christian higher education in the growing Pacific Northwest. Fletcher B. Cherington served as its first president in the early 1890s. During the early twentieth century, the institution was known as the College of Puget Sound and expanded its academic offerings and campus facilities. In 1960, it adopted the name University of Puget Sound to reflect broader academic ambitions. Over time, the university transitioned from its formal church affiliation to an independent governing structure. The addition and later sale of its law school in the 1990s marked a renewed focus on undergraduate liberal arts education. Today, University of Puget Sound operates as a private liberal arts college serving students in Tacoma and beyond.
