History

Saint Louis University was founded in 1818 in St. Louis, Missouri, as the Saint Louis Academy by Bishop Louis William Valentine DuBourg. In 1820 it became a college, and in 1827 it was placed under the direction of the Society of Jesus. The institution was chartered as Saint Louis University in 1832, becoming the first university established west of the Mississippi River. During the nineteenth century, Saint Louis University expanded its curriculum and professional education, including the establishment of its School of Law in 1843. In the twentieth century, the university developed major programs in medicine and health sciences and expanded its campus in midtown St. Louis. Saint Louis University later established a campus in Madrid, Spain, and grew into a comprehensive research university while maintaining its Jesuit Catholic identity.
