University of Louisiana at Lafayette

University of Louisiana at Lafayette is a public research university located in Lafayette, Louisiana. Founded in 1898, it is part of the University of Louisiana System and serves more than 19,000 students. University of Louisiana at Lafayette was founded in 1898 as the Southwestern Louisiana Industrial Institute in Lafayette, Louisiana, with a mission to provide practical and technical education to the region. Edwin Lewis Stephens became its first president in 1900 and guided its early growth. In 1921, the institution was renamed the Southwestern Louisiana Institute of Liberal and Technical Learning, reflecting an expanded academic focus. It became the University of Southwestern Louisiana in 1960 as programs and enrollment increased. During the late twentieth century, the university added graduate and doctoral offerings and strengthened research initiatives. In 1999, during its centennial celebration, it adopted the name University of Louisiana at Lafayette. In the twenty-first century, University of Louisiana at Lafayette has continued to expand research activity, academic programs, and community engagement while serving as a major public university in the state.
