History

The University of South Alabama was founded in 1963 when the Alabama Legislature authorized the creation of a new public university in Mobile to expand access to higher education in southwest Alabama. The institution replaced extension programs previously operated by the University of Alabama, and its first classes were held in 1964. Frederick Palmer Whiddon was appointed as the first president and guided the University of South Alabama for more than three decades, overseeing rapid growth in academic programs and campus facilities. The university awarded its first degrees in 1967 and gained accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools in 1968. Over time, the University of South Alabama expanded to include multiple colleges and schools, a medical school, and a growing research enterprise. In the decades that followed, it continued to develop health care, research, and community partnerships across the Gulf Coast region.
