History

Eastern Michigan University was founded in 1849 as Michigan State Normal School in Ypsilanti, Michigan, becoming the first teacher-training institution in the state and one of the earliest normal schools in the United States. The school opened to students in 1853 with a mission to prepare qualified teachers for Michigan’s growing public school system. In 1899, it became Michigan State Normal College and was the first normal school in the nation to offer a four-year curriculum. As academic offerings expanded beyond teacher education, the institution was renamed Eastern Michigan College in 1956 and achieved university status as Eastern Michigan University in 1959. During the late twentieth century, Eastern Michigan University added graduate and doctoral programs and expanded its colleges and research activity. Today, Eastern Michigan University remains a comprehensive public university serving students across a broad range of disciplines.
