History

Indiana State University was founded in 1865 in Terre Haute, Indiana, as the Indiana State Normal School, established by the Indiana General Assembly to train teachers for the state’s growing public school system. Classes began in 1870, and the institution focused primarily on teacher education during its early decades. Indiana State University awarded its first bachelor’s degrees in 1908 and introduced master’s programs in 1928, reflecting its expanding academic scope. The institution was renamed Indiana State Teachers College in 1929, Indiana State College in 1961, and officially became Indiana State University in 1965 as programs broadened beyond teacher preparation.
