History

University of Alaska Fairbanks was established in 1917 as the Alaska Agricultural College and School of Mines after the U.S. Congress set aside land for a higher education institution in the territory. Its roots trace to a federal agricultural experiment station founded in Fairbanks in 1906. Classes began in 1922 on a ridge overlooking the Chena River Valley, and Charles E. Bunnell served as the first president. In 1935, the institution was renamed the University of Alaska to reflect its expanding academic and research mission. Following Alaska statehood in 1959, the Fairbanks campus grew in enrollment and research capacity. In 1975, the statewide University of Alaska system was reorganized, and the Fairbanks campus became University of Alaska Fairbanks. Over time, University of Alaska Fairbanks developed into a major center for Arctic, geophysical, and environmental research, maintaining its role as the system’s primary research institution.
