History

Southern Illinois University Edwardsville was established in 1957 to expand access to public higher education in the Metro East region of Illinois. Originally created as an extension of Southern Illinois University Carbondale, the new campus responded to post–World War II population growth and increasing demand for college opportunities near St. Louis. Land for the Edwardsville campus was acquired in the late 1950s, and construction of the core campus followed in the 1960s. In 1968, John S. Rendleman became the first president of Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, guiding its early development. In 1971, the SIU Board of Trustees formally designated the campus as Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville. Over the following decades, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville expanded its academic offerings, added professional schools such as dental medicine and pharmacy, and transitioned to NCAA Division I athletics, shaping its modern institutional profile in Edwardsville, Illinois.
