History

William & Mary was founded in 1693 in Williamsburg, Virginia, under a royal charter granted by King William III and Queen Mary II, making it the second-oldest college in the United States. Established to educate clergy and civic leaders in colonial Virginia, William & Mary played an important role in early American history and educated figures including Thomas Jefferson and John Marshall. The university endured closures during the American Revolution and the Civil War, reopening in 1888 with support from the Commonwealth of Virginia. In the 20th century, William & Mary expanded its academic programs, admitted women as degree-seeking students in 1918, and developed graduate and professional schools. It later established the Virginia Institute of Marine Science and strengthened its research profile. Today, William & Mary operates as a public research university while maintaining its historic campus and longstanding traditions.
