Villanova University

Villanova University is a private Catholic research university located in Villanova, Pennsylvania, a suburb of Philadelphia. Founded and sponsored by the Order of Saint Augustine, it is the oldest Catholic university in Pennsylvania. Villanova University was founded in 1842 when the Augustinian friars established the Augustinian College of Villanova in what is now Villanova, Pennsylvania, just outside Philadelphia. The institution was created to provide Catholic education rooted in the intellectual and spiritual traditions of Saint Augustine. In its early years, Villanova focused on classical studies and the liberal arts. The college received a charter from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in 1848. During the twentieth century, Villanova expanded its academic offerings and enrollment, adding programs in engineering, business, nursing, and law. In 1953, Villanova College was officially elevated to university status, becoming Villanova University. Postwar growth, expanded graduate education, and campus development strengthened its academic profile. Today, Villanova University continues to develop as a comprehensive Catholic research university while maintaining its Augustinian identity and commitment to service.
