History

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute was founded in 1824 in Troy, New York, when Stephen Van Rensselaer established the Rensselaer School to apply science to practical life. The school opened in 1825 and was incorporated by the State of New York in 1826. Samuel Blatchford served as its first president. In 1833 the institution became the Rensselaer Institute, and during the 1850s its mission broadened to emphasize engineering and applied science. It was renamed Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1861. After a major fire in 1904 destroyed the main building, the institute expanded under President Palmer Ricketts, adding new departments and degrees. Post–World War II growth brought expanded research activity and campus development.
