Florida State University

Florida State University is a public research university located in Tallahassee, Florida. It is part of the State University System of Florida and offers a broad range of undergraduate, graduate, and professional degree programs across disciplines including the sciences, humanities, business, law, medicine, and the arts. The university operates additional campuses in Panama City, Florida, and the Republic of Panama. Florida State University is known for its research activity, the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory, and strong programs in criminology, business, and the performing arts. Florida State University traces its origins to 1851, when the Florida Legislature established two seminaries of learning, including the West Florida Seminary in Tallahassee. Classes began in 1857, marking the start of the institution that would become Florida State University. In 1901 it was reorganized as Florida State College, and in 1905 the Buckman Act transformed it into Florida State College for Women. During the early twentieth century, the college expanded its academic programs and campus facilities, becoming one of the largest women’s colleges in the United States. In 1947, following World War II and growing demand for higher education, the institution became coeducational and adopted the name Florida State University. In the decades that followed, Florida State University developed into a comprehensive public research university, adding doctoral programs, expanding research initiatives, and establishing nationally recognized academic centers in Tallahassee and beyond.
