History

Northeastern University was founded in 1898 in Boston, Massachusetts, as the Evening Institute for Younger Men established by the Boston YMCA. Its early mission focused on providing practical education to working adults. Under the leadership of its first president, Frank Palmer Speare, the institution expanded its programs and established a law school and early cooperative education initiatives. In 1916 it became Northeastern College, and in 1922 it adopted the name Northeastern University. The university received general degree-granting authority in 1923 and continued to broaden its academic offerings. Northeastern separated fully from the YMCA in 1948 and experienced significant growth in enrollment and campus development in the mid-20th century. In recent decades, Northeastern University has expanded its research activity and established additional campuses, including Northeastern University–London in 2022, reflecting its evolution into a global institution.
