History

Western Kentucky University was founded in 1906 in Bowling Green, Kentucky, when the Kentucky General Assembly created the Western Kentucky State Normal School to train teachers. The new institution absorbed the privately operated Southern Normal School, and Henry Hardin Cherry became its founding president. Classes began in 1907, and by 1909 the university had acquired the former Potter College campus, relocating to its present hilltop site in 1911. In 1922, Western Kentucky University was authorized to grant four-year degrees and expanded its curriculum beyond teacher education. The institution underwent several name changes, becoming Western Kentucky State College in 1948 and officially Western Kentucky University in 1966. Over the decades, Western Kentucky University developed graduate programs, regional campuses, and research initiatives, evolving into a comprehensive public university serving students throughout Kentucky and beyond.
