University of North Carolina Wilmington

The University of North Carolina Wilmington is a public research university located in Wilmington, North Carolina. The University of North Carolina Wilmington was founded on September 4, 1947, as Wilmington College, a junior college created to serve World War II veterans returning to southeastern North Carolina. Initially operating under the New Hanover County Board of Education, the institution offered freshman-level courses and quickly gained accreditation. In 1963, Wilmington College became a four-year institution authorized to grant bachelor’s degrees. In 1969, it joined the University of North Carolina system and adopted its current name, the University of North Carolina Wilmington. The university expanded its academic offerings in 1977 with the authorization of its first master’s programs. Over the following decades, University of North Carolina Wilmington developed additional graduate and doctoral programs and strengthened research activity, particularly in marine and coastal studies, reflecting its Wilmington, North Carolina location.
