History

Oklahoma State University-Main Campus was founded in 1890 as Oklahoma Agricultural and Mechanical College under the Morrill Act, which established land-grant institutions to advance education in agriculture and the mechanical arts. Located in Stillwater, Oklahoma, the college held its first classes in 1891. Early leadership, beginning with its first president Robert Barker, helped shape the institution’s academic foundation during the territorial period before Oklahoma achieved statehood in 1907. Through the early twentieth century, the campus expanded its curriculum beyond agriculture and engineering to include liberal arts and scientific programs. In 1957, the institution was renamed Oklahoma State University to reflect its broader mission. Over time, Oklahoma State University-Main Campus developed into the flagship of the Oklahoma State University System, adding branch campuses and expanding research initiatives. Today, it operates as a comprehensive public research university serving students across diverse academic fields.
