History

Wayne State University was founded in 1868 with the establishment of the Detroit Medical College, now its School of Medicine, in Detroit, Michigan. In the early twentieth century, additional institutions emerged, including the Detroit Normal Training School in 1881 and the Detroit Junior College in 1917. The College of the City of Detroit was formed in 1923, offering four-year degrees. In 1933, Frank Cody became the first president as the various colleges were unified into a single university organization, later named Wayne University in 1934. The institution expanded its graduate and professional programs during the mid-twentieth century and was renamed Wayne State University in 1956. Over time, Wayne State University developed into a major urban research university, adding schools in law, business, social work, and other fields while strengthening its role in Detroit’s educational, medical, and cultural landscape.
