History

Hofstra University was founded in 1935 in Hempstead, New York, as Nassau College–Hofstra Memorial of New York University. The institution was established on the estate of William S. Hofstra and Kate Mason Hofstra, whose bequest made the campus possible. In its early years, Hofstra operated as an extension of New York University, providing undergraduate education to students on Long Island. In 1937 it became Hofstra College, and in 1939 it gained independence from NYU. During the mid‑twentieth century, Hofstra University expanded its academic offerings, adding graduate programs and professional schools. It achieved university status in 1963, reflecting its broadened scope. Over subsequent decades, Hofstra University continued to grow, establishing schools in law, business, education, and health sciences.
