Indiana University-Indianapolis

Indiana University-Indianapolis, officially known as Indiana University Indianapolis (IU Indianapolis or IU Indy), is a public urban research university located in downtown Indianapolis, Indiana. It is a core campus of the Indiana University system and was established in 2024 following the separation of Indiana University–Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI). The campus serves as Indiana University’s primary center for health sciences and urban-focused programs, hosting the School of Medicine, School of Dentistry, Kelley School of Business Indianapolis, and the McKinney School of Law. With a strong emphasis on research, professional education, and community engagement, Indiana University-Indianapolis attracts students seeking careers in healthcare, public affairs, business, law, and applied sciences in a metropolitan setting.

Indiana University-Indianapolis was officially founded on July 1, 2024, following the dissolution of Indiana University–Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI), a joint campus that had operated since 1969. IUPUI was created to expand access to higher education and professional programs in Indiana’s capital city, combining resources from Indiana University and Purdue University. Over more than five decades, the campus grew into a major center for health sciences, law, business, and public affairs, anchored by the Indiana University School of Medicine and other professional schools. In 2024, Indiana University-Indianapolis emerged as an independent campus within the Indiana University system, while Purdue University established its own separate Indianapolis campus. Since its founding in 2024, Indiana University-Indianapolis has continued to expand research activity, earned Carnegie R1 designation, and strengthened its role as Indiana’s primary urban public research university.
