History

The University of Central Florida was founded in 1963 as Florida Technological University to support the nation’s growing space program and the nearby Kennedy Space Center. Located in Orlando, Florida, the institution opened its doors in 1968 with a focus on engineering and technology education. Charles N. Millican served as the first president and guided the university through its formative years. In 1978, the Florida Legislature renamed the institution the University of Central Florida to reflect its expanding academic mission beyond technology. During the 1980s and 1990s, University of Central Florida broadened its academic programs, research initiatives, and community partnerships. Continued growth in enrollment and research activity in the 21st century established University of Central Florida as a major public research university serving Central Florida and the state.
