University of New Hampshire-Main Campus

University of New Hampshire-Main Campus is a public land-grant research university located in Durham, New Hampshire. It serves as the flagship institution of the University System of New Hampshire and is classified as an R1 doctoral university with very high research activity. The university offers a wide range of undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs across multiple colleges, including liberal arts, engineering, business, health sciences, and marine science. Its coastal New England setting and residential campus contribute to a traditional college experience, while its research initiatives and community partnerships attract students interested in hands-on learning, public service, and scientific inquiry.

University of New Hampshire-Main Campus was founded in 1866 as the New Hampshire College of Agriculture and the Mechanic Arts under the Morrill Act of 1862. Originally located in Hanover in association with Dartmouth College, the institution moved to Durham in 1893 following a gift of land from Benjamin Thompson. That same year, Charles S. Murkland became the first president after the move to Durham, marking the beginning of expanded academic development. In 1923, the school was renamed the University of New Hampshire, reflecting its broader curriculum beyond agriculture and mechanical arts. Throughout the twentieth century, University of New Hampshire-Main Campus expanded its academic colleges, research facilities, and residential campus. It later became part of the University System of New Hampshire and achieved R1 research classification, shaping its modern role as the state’s flagship public research university.
