Illinois Institute of Technology

Illinois Institute of Technology is a private research university located in Chicago, Illinois. Commonly known as Illinois Tech, it focuses on engineering, science, architecture, business, design, human sciences, and law. The university’s main campus is situated in Chicago’s Bronzeville neighborhood and includes buildings designed by architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. Illinois Institute of Technology traces its origins to 1890, when Chicago minister Frank Wakely Gunsaulus inspired a donation from industrialist Philip Danforth Armour to establish the Armour Institute of Technology. The Armour Institute opened in 1893 to provide practical education in engineering, chemistry, architecture, and related fields. In 1940, Armour Institute merged with Lewis Institute, a Chicago institution founded in 1895, forming Illinois Institute of Technology. Henry Townley Heald became the first president of the newly unified university. During the mid-20th century, architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe led the design of the modernist Mies Campus in Chicago. Illinois Institute of Technology expanded further with the addition of the Institute of Design in 1949 and Chicago-Kent College of Law in 1969. Over time, Illinois Institute of Technology developed into a comprehensive research university with programs spanning engineering, science, business, design, and law.
