University at Albany

University at Albany is a public research university in Albany, New York, and a member of the State University of New York (SUNY) system. Founded as a teachers’ training institution, it has evolved into a comprehensive research university offering undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs across the arts and sciences, business, public affairs, engineering, and public health. By the early 20th century, it became the New York State College for Teachers at Albany and gained authority to confer bachelor’s and later master’s degrees. In 1948, it became part of the newly created State University of New York system. The institution was renamed the State University of New York at Albany in 1962, coinciding with the development of its Uptown Campus. In 2000, University at Albany was designated a Research 1 institution, reflecting expanded doctoral education and research activity. Today, University at Albany continues to grow as a public research university in New York’s capital city.
