History

Clark University was founded in 1887 in Worcester, Massachusetts, through the philanthropy of businessman Jonas Gilman Clark. The university was incorporated on March 31, 1887, and opened in 1889 as the first graduate-only institution in the United States, reflecting the emerging German research model. G. Stanley Hall, a prominent psychologist, became Clark University’s first president and helped establish its early academic reputation. Undergraduate instruction began in 1902 with the creation of Clark College, and the administration of the college and university was formally unified in 1920. In 1909, Clark University hosted Sigmund Freud for a landmark series of lectures during its twentieth anniversary celebration. Over the twentieth century, the institution expanded its academic offerings, including the establishment of the Graduate School of Geography in 1921 and the School of Management in 1982. Today, Clark University combines undergraduate and graduate education with a continued emphasis on research and community engagement.
