University of Vermont

The University of Vermont is a public research university located in Burlington, Vermont. Chartered in 1791, it is among the oldest universities in New England and operates as a land-grant institution following its 1865 merger with Vermont Agricultural College. In 1865, the University of Vermont merged with Vermont Agricultural College, becoming a land-grant institution under the Morrill Act and formally adopting the name University of Vermont and State Agricultural College. Over the twentieth century, the university expanded its academic programs, research activity, and professional schools, including medicine and graduate studies. Today, the University of Vermont continues to operate as Vermont’s flagship public university, integrating research, teaching, and public service.
