History

Massachusetts Institute of Technology was founded in 1861 after the Massachusetts legislature granted a charter championed by geologist William Barton Rogers. Rogers envisioned a new type of institution devoted to practical science and engineering education to meet the needs of a rapidly industrializing nation. Although the Civil War delayed operations, classes began in Boston in 1865, and Rogers served as the first president. In 1916, Massachusetts Institute of Technology moved across the Charles River to its current Cambridge campus, expanding its laboratories and research facilities. During the 20th century, the university played significant roles in advances in physics, engineering, and wartime research, including work connected to radar and national defense. Postwar growth strengthened graduate education and interdisciplinary research. Today, Massachusetts Institute of Technology is known for its emphasis on scientific research, innovation, and collaboration across engineering, science, management, and the humanities.
