Georgia Southern University

Georgia Southern University is a public research university located in Statesboro, Georgia, with additional campuses in Savannah and Hinesville. Founded in 1906, it is part of the University System of Georgia and classified as a doctoral university with high research activity. The university offers a wide range of undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral programs across multiple colleges, including business, engineering, education, health professions, and the sciences. Georgia Southern serves a diverse student population drawn primarily from Georgia and the southeastern United States, and it is known for its regional engagement, professional programs, and Division I athletics in the Sun Belt Conference.

Georgia Southern University was founded in 1906 in Statesboro, Georgia, as the First District Agricultural and Mechanical School, with classes beginning in 1908. Originally created to provide agricultural and homemaking education for rural communities, the institution shifted its focus toward teacher preparation in the 1920s and was renamed Georgia Normal School in 1924. As its academic offerings expanded, it became South Georgia Teachers College in 1929 and later Georgia Teachers College in 1939. In 1959, reflecting a broader curriculum beyond teacher education, it adopted the name Georgia Southern College. The institution integrated in 1965 and introduced graduate programs in the mid-twentieth century. In 1990, it achieved university status as Georgia Southern University. A major milestone occurred in 2018 with the consolidation of Armstrong State University, expanding Georgia Southern University’s presence to Savannah and strengthening its role within the University System of Georgia.
